Is it a cataract?
A cataract is a gradual clouding of the eye’s natural lens. It is common with age and can also be linked to diabetes, injury, steroid use or earlier eye problems.
What to expect
A complete check-up of your vision, eye pressure and the back of the eye, plus measurements to work out the right lens power.
Dr. Gupta explains whether surgery is needed now or can wait, the type of lens that suits your eyes and lifestyle, and the risks and benefits.
Cataract surgery replaces the clouded lens with a clear artificial lens through a very small incision. It is usually done under local anaesthesia as a day-care procedure.
You use prescribed eye drops for a few weeks and come back for check-ups. Most people resume light daily activities within a few days; your doctor will advise you specifically.

The procedure itself is usually short, often around 15–30 minutes per eye. You should plan for a few hours at the hospital for preparation, the surgery and a brief rest afterwards.
Surgery is done with numbing eye drops or a local anaesthetic, so most people feel pressure or touch but not pain. Mild scratchiness or irritation for a day or two afterwards is common.
When cloudy vision starts to affect what you need to do — reading, driving, working or moving around safely. A cataract usually progresses slowly, so it is not always urgent, but an examination will tell you where you stand and whether waiting is safe.
That depends on the lens chosen and your eyes. Many people need glasses for reading or fine work after standard lenses. Other lens types can reduce dependence on glasses; Dr. Gupta will explain what is realistic for you.
Most people return to light everyday activities within a few days. You will be advised to avoid rubbing the eye, dirty water, dust and heavy lifting for a period, and to use the prescribed drops on schedule.
It is one of the most commonly performed operations and most people do well. As with any surgery there are risks, such as infection, inflammation or the need for further treatment. Serious complications are uncommon, and Dr. Gupta will discuss the risks that apply to you before you decide.
Often yes, but these conditions need to be well controlled and your retina checked. Bring your medicines list and recent reports to your first visit.
Many health policies cover cataract surgery, but terms differ by insurer and plan. Tell us your insurer when you book and we will guide you on the paperwork.
A short examination will tell you whether you have a cataract, how advanced it is and what your options are.
